On frame-setting mäßig-adverbials in non-sentenceinitial positions

In this talk we challenge a) the claim that frame-setting domain adverbials in the definition of Jacobs (2001) are restricted to the sentence-initial position and b) the claim that domain adverbials not being in the sentence-initial position merely satisfy parameters of a semantically under-specified predicate, as assumed by Ernst (2007) for English domain adverbials. We consider German mäßig-adverbials as in (1).
(1) Geldmäßig geht es Maria gut.
‘Moneywise, Maria is fine.’
A rating study tested examples in which the sentence-initial position was occupied by a contrastive topic as in (2). The results suggest that mäßig-adverbials serve as frame-setter not only in the sentence-initial position by providing the background against which a contrast is interpreted.
(2) Wie geht es Deinen Kindern?
‘How are your children doing?’
(a) Mar/Ia geht es geldmäßig gut\, aber /PEter ist pleite\.
‘Moneywise, Maria is fine but Peter is broke.’
(b) #Mar/Ia geht es geldmäßig gut\, aber /PEter ist unglücklich verliebt\.
‘Moneywise, Maria is fine but Peter has unhappily fallen in love.’
(c) Mar/Ia hat zur Zeit viel Geld\, aber /PEter ist unglücklich verliebt\.
‘Maria currently has a lot of money but Peter has unhappily fallen in love.’
