Heritage Language Speakers: 20 Years of Experience
Originating from many different sources, Russian as a heritage language in Germany displays a spectrum of developmental tendencies: both attrition and maintenance can be observed in various degrees. Research has shown that bilingual children who grow up without regular instruction in Russian lack higher-level skills in the language, and their Russian is influenced by German; nevertheless, they could enjoy different opportunities to meet their peers or to use their language (Protassova 2007). We have followed up 6 young Russian- German bilinguals (their skills in home language are restricted, but available) for 20 years. It started as a project at the Institute for German Language, Mannheim, where immigrant Russia’s German families were studied longitudinally in their linguistic practices during the process of adaptation to the new cultural and linguistic environment (Meng 2001). We demonstrate what the children in these families have achieved, whether they still speak their heritage language Russian and what became of their parents’ ambitious plan to see them as fully competent speakers of both languages.
The teaching materials for the heritage speakers of Russian outside the nation are designed for their specific needs and requirements. Bilingual children should be drawn into both languages and encouraged to use them in their daily life in all functions, promoting linguistic variation and vocabulary growth. The wellknown variables in individual heritage-speaker profiles, e.g. age; background; motivation; exposure to the heritage language; productive and/or receptive skills; gaps in acquisition (Brecht & Ingold 1998, Andrews 2000, Polinsky 2008) apply to the heritage learners in Germany.
